WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ILLUSTRATION?

The examples of Harvard references, available in the Library section of CampusMoodle, include templates for referencing illustrations. But what does ‘illustration’ cover?

The answer is that it covers all kind of things such as photographs, tables, figures, graphs, pie charts or diagrams, but this list is not exhaustive.

What it does not cover is images of works of art or maps, for which separate templates are provided.

If in doubt, consult The Referee!

WHEN DO I NEED AN ELECTRONIC REFERENCE FOR A BOOK OR A JOURNAL ARTICLE?

We provide a large number of books and journal articles to you in electronic format, but you do not give an online reference if you could have read the book or the article in hard copy, ie if it is available in paper.

The examples of references in CampusMoodle give sample templates for online books and articles, but these are to be used only where the book or the article is ONLY available online.

If in doubt contact the Library Service’s Client Services team at libclient@rgu.ac.uk.

And remember, if you’ve got a referencing problem that you would like The Referee to help you with, just add a comment to this post.

ONE CHAPTER OF AN EDITED BOOK

An edited book usually contains chapters written by different authors, and the editor or editors are the people who have collected and organised those chapters for publication. The editors may also write some of the chapters themselves. You should use a reference which gives credit to the author of the individual chapter, and then gives the details of the book and it’s editor(s).

For example

BROWN, C., 2011. How to avoid losing sleep because of worrying about your references. In: B. SMITH and C. JONES, eds. Referencing made easy. Aberdeen: Pittodrie Press. pp. 14-29.

Simples-ish, but remember to give the page reference and to put the title of the book, not the title of the chapter, in italics. The initials of the editor(s) precede the surname(s) rather than following them. Strange but true!

The REFEREE is being let out on leave for a couple of days, but he will be back to answer any queries you have sent him on Monday.
