RefWorks changes!

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

Just a quick reminder that there are various changes happening to RefWorks at start of January.

We are changing the way you access RefWorks by shifting from the Athens Login system to the Shibboleth login system. And at the start of January the Athens access route will no longer be available.

However to prevent any access problems over the Christmas holidays the Athens access route will continue to be available until the start of the second week in January.

But if you wish to continue to use RefWorks in the New Year you must create a new Shibboleth account and transfer your references from your old account into the new account.

Full details on the change, including how to backup your references, create a new account, and restore your references, can be found on the web pages.

Also in January there will be a new look to RefWorks as the RefWorks Classic interface will be replaced by the new, more intuitive, RefWorks 2.0 interface.

More information about this and links to some videos and tutorials can found in this blog post.

Changes to Art Full Text journals

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Recently Art Full Text has moved from being hosted by WilsonWeb to being hosted by EBSCOHost. This blog entry gives information about how to use the new search screen and get access to the journal articles.

However while this move is being completed there is a chance that the Find it @ RGU service will not always give accurate results.

For example you could find a journal article on a database, click Find it @ RGU, and be told the article is not available online when it is or you may follow the link to the full text and then not find the article.

Therefore over the next few weeks when looking for articles and journals in the art and design and architecture subject areas it is vital that you also check the library catalogue to see if we have the journal and what years are available. To check the catalogue simply:

  • Go to the library home page
  • Click catalogue in the menu on the left
  • Enter the journal title in the search box
  • Change the drop down menu to journal title
  • Click search
  • If we have the journal it will either take you straight to the record or to a list of titles. If you offered more than one option click the title of the relevant journal.
  • When in the journal record click full record
  • This page tells you the holdings and, if available, will give a link to get to the online journal
  • If a link is available read the instructions contained in the URL, follow the link, find the journal title, and track down the article.

RefWorks – Change from Athens to Shibboleth Countdown

    Friday, December 16th, 2011

The changes to RefWorks are now getting closer and in the New Year the Athens access route will no longer be available!

    • New RefWorks users should simply create and use a RefWorks (Shibboleth) account.
    • Anyone who currently uses RefWorks and does not need access after 30th December 2011 can continue to use their current RefWorks (Athens) account.
    • But those current users who want to carry on using RefWorks after the 30th December 2011 must have a new Shibboleth account! But don’t worry you will not lose your references because you can easily transfer them from your old account to a new one.

To get access to RefWorks, find out how this affects you, see how to transfer your references from your old RefWorks account to a new one, and look at what changes this will cause please take a look at the all information on the library web pages.

And if you would like more information or to see a member of library staff for guidance with transferring your material then please contact the library.

    Changes to borrowing limits

    Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

We’ve raised the borrowing limit for students from 12 books to 15 books! All of our standard loan books can be borrowed for 56 days, but remember all books can be recalled, so keep an eye on your RGU email account for any recall notices.

Also, you can now have up to £5 of fines before your Library account is blocked. We’ve made this change to make it easier for you to borrow books when our Libraries are open for self-service only, though it’s always best to clear your fines before the amount gets too high! You can check your Library account for any fines or overdues by using the ‘My Account’ link from the Library Catalogue.
